We were seconds away from clicking the “Book Now” button for tickets from Tampa (TPA) to Bangkok (BKK), but out of curiosity, we opened another browser tab. “I wonder where in Asia we can fly to from the Sarasota (SRQ) airport.” There it was. We found a flight to Singapore (SIN) out of Sarsota (SRQ) for cheaper than we could fly to Bangkok (BKK) out of Tampa (TPA).
We hadn’t planned on going to Singapore. Singapore is one of those places that is easily traveled, a place we could save for later in life when we were older and have less time to spare. The infrastructure is in place for tourists and it’s a small enough city to be visited using a week of PTO. Maybe it was because we had just watched “Crazy, Rich Asians” or the Singapore episode on Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” but we were inspired. We left for Singapore a week later.
Our experience in Singapore was incredible. The food we ate, the buildings, the infrastructure, the diversity of its people – all of it. Incredible. We dived right in and stayed busy everyday. Here are some of the things/places that kept us busy in Singapore:
1. Gardens by the Bay – Cloud Forest
2. Gardens by the Bay – Flower Dome
3. Gardens by the Bay – Skywalk through Supertree Grove
4. Gardens by the Bay – Garden Rhapsody light show
5. Marina Promenade
6. Tour of Buddha Tooth Relic Temple
8. Singapore Botanic Gardens
9. Little India
10. Arab Street and Sultan Mosque
11. Food, food, and more food.
Singapore tempted us with its food, its accessibility, and its seemingly endless construction projects, but at the end of 5 days, we were ready to move on to a place a little less focused on rules and a little more focused on fun. Bangkok, you’re up next.
